Richard W. Sears, railway station agent in Minnesota, bought a shipment of watches
that a local jeweler refused to sign for. He established a side business selling
the watches to other station agents. He moved the buisiness to Chicago and and
founded with Alvah C. Roebuck (watchmaker) Sears, Roeguck and Company. This company
was quickly reorganized into a general mail-order company. In 1895 Julian Rosenwald
(clothing manufacturer) bought the company, though Sears remained presiden. Roebuck
resigned due to poor health. Tradenames for guns: A. J. Aubrey Gun Co. American Bar Berkshire Chicago Long Range Wonder Gladiator J. C. Higgins Meriden Fire Arms New England Arms Ranger S.R.& Co. Sam Holt Sears T. Barker or Thomas Barker Ted Williams |
